Juvenile Common Loon Catching Crab

I was at Elgin Heritage Park in mid-February and walked out on the dock where about a half dozen birds were busy fishing. The Common Loons were mostly eating crab.

My reading says Loons strip off the arms before eating crabs, but that wasn't the case. These Loons were eating the crabs whole. Even the larger crabs!
